It was a year ago this week that North Nashville was destroyed by a vicious tornado. You do not think of February as a prime tornado month but it was last year. You do not think of Tennessee as a tornado magnet but we have the most deaths from the storms of any state in the nation and I really did not believe that until I moved here. One reason is the very bad weather forecasters we have and the hills hide the storms until they are right upon you and you can not get away from the storm in time.
The weather has turned down right cold the last few days and one bad thing about delivering newspapers we can not stay home if it is to cold outside. We are pretty much like the mail carriers neither rain nor snow or gloom of night will keep us from the delivery of the newspapers. I wish we got paid as well as letter carries do and where is our strong union at when we need it. I love my job and it is only a couple of months until it warms back up then we have a great job working at night and sleeping during the day when it is hot outside.
Man is it cold outside, it is going to get down into the single digits tonight and I am not ready for that at all. I will have to leave a drip going in the pipes to keep it from freezing up and busting. I sure do not want to deal with a busted pipe on a cold day like tomorrow is going to be. They are calling for flurries and temps in the mid twenties. That is to much like winter for me. I want it closer to eighty and a nice cool drink with an umbrella to cool me off man is that a pipe dream today.
It is never to cold to fish, I mean folks cut holes in the ice to go ice fishing. I am not that much an avid fisherman I guess, but I will go out when it is snowing and try to catch a few. Right now is the perfect time to go fishing and one thing I love is that many of the casual fishermen and women do not do out after the last of September and that leaves a lot more room on the lake for the rest of us. Today it is 47 degrees and I might have the lake to myself, I love this time of year. The fish are biting good right now too and that is a bonus.
Hurricane Ike looks like a huge storm that could cause havoc to the oil supply chain. If a lot of damage is brought to the oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico the price of gasoline here in America could shoot up close to $5.00 a gallon. Plus add in that the refineries near Houston could be affected thus driving up the price of gasoline and heating oil this fall. Let us hope that Hurricane Ike just dances around over open water and does as little damage as possible.
